Genoa v Internazionale Live Commentary & Result, 24/10/2020, Serie A

Inter clinch a 2-0 victory over Genoa thanks to second half goals from Lukaku and D’Ambrosio. The visitors had to work hard for their win, with the Genoa defence playing well and limiting their chances in front of goal, however, Barella made the difference, creating the opportunity for Lukaku to drift into the box and he powered the ball into the back of the net. They then doubled their lead when Ranocchia flicked on a corner delivery, which D’Ambrosio converted from just a few yards out.

    90′ + 3′ FULL-TIME: GENOA 0-2 INTER

90′ + 2′ Genoa are still pushing forward when they can, to try and nick a late consolation goal, but Handanovic has still yet to be tested in goal.

90′ There will be a minimum of three minutes added time played.

90′ Good strike! Kolarov gets forward from the left-back position and he drills a low shot towards the bottom right-hand corner of the net. However, Perin reads it well and gets down to make a good save.

88′ Ranocchia once again meets an Inter corner into the box, however this time his header flies high over the crossbar and doesn’t trouble Perin.

86′ A yellow card is shown to Bani for puling the shirt of Barella as the midfielder looked to break forward on the counter.

    Genoa

84′ Another Genoa sbstitution now, with Rovella heading off the pitch and he is replaced by Melegoni.

82′ Barella has made a difference for Inter since coming on, he created the opening goal and he been very influential in midfield, creating a few opportunities for the visitors.

    Internazionale

80′ The other change sees Darmian come off the pitch and he has been replaced by Kolarov.

    Internazionale

80′ Another double substitution by Inter now, with Vidal replaced by Nainggolan.

    Internazionale

79′ Ranocchia raced in front of his marker at the set piece, which was whipped into the penalty area and he got plenty of pace on the header, before D’Ambrosio converted at the back post.

    Internazionale

79′ GOOOAAALLL! Inter double their lead, it’s 2-0! Ranocchia meets a corner at the front post and flicks it on towards the far corner of the net, but it seemed to be heading wide before D’Ambrosio dived in and turned it into the goal from just a couple of yards out.

77′ The game is becoming quite scrappy now, with both teams battling for possession in midfield and there have been a few more free-kicks given away.

75′ Decent effort! Brozovic with a low strike from around 25 yards out, however, the shot is straight at Perin and the Genoa keeper makes a comfortable save.

74′ Genoa are trying to push more players forward, but this is then leaving them more open at the back, with more space for Inter to break forward on the counter.

    A. Pinamonti

    L. Martínez

    Internazionale

72′ Another Inter change now as Martinez is replaced by Pinamonti and the striker isn’t happy about something as he is seen punching his seat on the bench after leaving the pitch.

71′ Inter are pushing forward in search of a second goal now, which would surely wrap up the three points for them. Can Genoa pull one back? There is certainly plenty of time left on the clock.

69′ OFFSIDE! Inter have the ball in the back of the net again, but it is ruled out for offside. Lukaku again with the run, he gets in behind the Genoa defence after a lofted ball over the top. The striker then chips it over Perin, but it won’t count.

67′ Among the teams he’s faced more than once, Genoa are the one against which Lukaku has the best goal average in the league between Serie A and Premier League (five goals in three games).

    Genoa

65′ Genoa make a substitution following the Inter goal, with Pjaca the man coming off and he has been replaced by Shomurodov.

    Internazionale

64′ Barella has been involved almost straight away from his introduction from the bench, with the midfielder sliding the ball through to Lukaku past a couple of Genoa defenders and the striker then produced a fine finish.

    Internazionale

64′ GOOOAAALLL! Inter take the lead, it’s 1-0! Lukaku breaks the deadlock for the visitors on 64 minutes. Barella plays a lovely quick pass through to the striker on the edge of the box, who turns one way and then cuts back and fires the ball into the top left-hand corner of the net.

63′ Decent effort! Genoa manage to work the ball into the Inter final third and Pandev picks up the ball on the edge of the penalty area and goes for goal, but he drags his shot wide of the Inter goal.

    Genoa

61′ The other Genoa change sees Badelj replaced by Zajc.

    I. Radovanović

    V. Behrami

    Genoa

61′ Genoa now with a double substitution, with Behrami coming off and he has been replaced by Radovanovic.

60′ Inter have the ball in the back of the net! Hakimi races down the right wing, gets to the byline and then lays the ball back to Martinez, who slides it into the bottom left-hand corner of the net. However, it is ruled out as the ball had gone out of play before Hakimi played the cross.

    Internazionale

58′ Perisic was lively in the first half, but has hardly touched the ball in the second, so he has also been replaced, with Hakimi coming on.

    Internazionale

58′ It’s a double substitution for Inter and the first change sees Eriksen replaced by Barella.

56′ It looks like Inter are getting ready to make a substitution of their own now, they need something to change as they are struggling to create anything and seem short of ideas. Lukaku and Martinez haven’t been involved much in this second half.

54′ The hosts are keeping their shape well and are working together to stop Inter from finding any space in behind or in the final third. So far neither team has created a chance in front of goal.

52′ Inter have managed to regain possession and they are now pressing forward, keeping Genoa penned inside their half. However, similar to the first period, they are struggling to break down the hosts defence.

50′ Inter have scored at least 11 goals in their first four Serie A games for the first time since 2013/14. However, the Nerazzurri have conceded eight goals at this stage for the first time since 2011/12.

48′ Genoa have started the second half well, keeping the ball well and they have picked up the pace and are showing more urgency to push forward and test Handanovic in the Inter goal.

46′ The second half is under way!

    Luca Pellegrini

    L. Czyborra

    Genoa

46′ Genoa have made a substitution ahead of the second half, with Czyborra replaced by Pellegrini.

Genoa have defended for much of the first half, with Pandev and Pjaca not involved much, but they did work an opportunity late on, with Ghiglione racing through on goal, but he didn’t have the pace to beat the Inter defenders.

It’s goalless at the break between Genoa and Inter, with neither keeper yet to have a save to make, despite Inter dominating much of the half. The visitors have kept the ball well and got into good positions in the final third, with Martinez firing over the crossbar, before Vidal and Lukaku had efforts blocked. Meanwhile Genoa look dangerous on the counter, with Inter playing such a high defensive line.

    45′ HALF-TIME: GENOA 0-0 INTER

44′ CHANCE! Genoa break forward quickly on the counter-attack and Ghiglione is released in behind the Inter defence by Pandev. It looks like he only has Handanovic to beat, but Inter get players back quickly and crowd him out, forcing the winger wide and he can’t get a shot away. Wasted opportunity.

42′ There’s not long left to play before the end of the first half now, can either side break the deadlock before the half-time whistle?

    Internazionale

40′ The first yellow card of the game is shown to Martinez after he slides in and tries to meet Eriksen’s low cross into the box, but Goldaniga gets their first and the striker catches him late.

38′ Lukaku has been lively in attack, he has just won another corner for Inter, after Czyborra blocks his attempted cross into the box. The resulting corner comes to nothing, with Genoa comfortably clearing the danger.

36′ Genoa have not scored in their last two league games, last going three Serie A games without a goal in March 2019 under Cesare Prandelli.

34′ The front two of Pandev and Pjaca have hardly touched the ball for Genoa in the first half, instead they have had to sit back and chase it around the pitch.

32′ We’re past the half an hour mark now and it remains goalless between Genoa and Inter, but the visitors are starting to look dangerous in the final third and will hope the get on the scoresheet before the break.

30′ Inter are starting to increase the tempo of their game now, they are finding a lot more space down the wings and the Genoa defence are starting to sit deeper and deeper to soak up the pressure.

28′ CHANCE! Perisic dribbles into the box, getting to the left-hand touchline and he whips in a dangerous ball towards Lukaku, who throws himself at it, but he just can’t get there first ahead of Bani, who follows the striker all the way and eventually clears the danger. Lukaku appeals for a penalty as the two players tussled for the ball, but nothing is given.

26′ BLOCKED! Inter win a corner and the first ball into the box is well cleared, but it comes straight back into the penalty area from the right, falling to Vidal at the far post, who beats his marker and then fires a shot towards goal, but his effort is superbly blocked. That would’ve tested Perin.

24′ None of the last 14 Serie A games between Genoa and Inter have ended as a draw, with the Nerazzuri winning nine to Genoa’s five since a 0-0 draw in May 2013.

22′ The only chance we’ve had at goal so far has been the Martinez effort from the edge of the box, with neither keeper yet to be forced into action, with much of the game being played in midfield.

20′ Inter try and play the ball out from the back, but are put under good pressure from the Genoa attackers and Bastoni ends up having to clear the danger by putting it out of play.

18′ The pace of the game is quite slow at the moment, with Inter just keeping the ball nicely and waiting for their opportunity to create an opportunity in front of goal. Eriksen has just whipped a lovely ball into the box towards Martinez, but the striker fouls his marker and gives away a free-kick.

16′ Eriksen has been heavily involved for the visitors so far, getting on the ball a lot in midfield and linking up play nicely to Lukaku and Martinez.

14′ CLOSE! Inter work the ball really well down the left wing, getting into the final third and Martinez drops back to the edge of the penalty area, he receives the ball and tries to curl it into the back of the net from 20 yards out. However, it flies just inches over the crossbar.

12′ Inter have won their last four Serie A meetings against Genoa by an overall score of 16-0: only once in their Serie A history have the Nerazzurri have gained five wins in a row while keeping five clean sheets against a single opponent (against Atalanta between 1951 and 1953).

10′ This is better here from the hosts, they have managed to get hold of the ball in the middle of the pitch, however, Inter are playing a good high press and they are unable to get it through to their attacking players in the Inter half.

8′ Perisic tries to drill a cross into the penalty area, towards Lukaku who has already looked dangerous so far. However, it is well blocked and the deflection takes it straight into the hands of Perin.

6′ Offside! Pandev races through on goal, getting in behind the Inter defence, who stand still and wait for the offside flag to go up. Luckily for them, Pandev’s touch in the penalty area is poor and it goes out of play before he can fire a shot at goal. The linesmans flag now goes up once the opportunity has played out.

5′ It’s Inter with the early pressure here so far, they are keeping the ball well and are currently camped inside the Genoa half of the pitch, with the hosts having to get everyone back behind the ball.

3′ Eriksen plays a lovely lofted ball over the top of the Genoa defence to Lukaku who chests the ball down and tries to turn and fire a shot at goal, but he is pulled up for offside.

The teams are out on the pitch and kick-off is just a few minutes away, stay tuned for all of the match action!

Meanwhile Inter have made four changes to their side that drew in midweek, with Ranocchia, Bastoni, Brozovic and Martinez all coming into the side, to replace De Vrij, Kolarov, Barella and Alexis Sanchez, the latter being substituted at half-time in that Champions League tie.

Genoa have made three changes to their starting XI, with Masiello, Radovanovic and Shomurodov all dropping down to the bench and they have been replaced by Goldaniga, Behrami and Pjaca.

INTER SUBS: Aleksandar Kolarov, Filip Stankovic, Stefan De Vrij, Daniele Padelli, Franco Ezequiel Carboni, Franco Orlando Vezzoni, Radja Nainggolan, Nicolo Barella, Andrea Pinamonti, Lorenzo Moretti, Achraf Hakimi, Martin Satriano.

INTER (3-4-1-2): Samir Handanovic; Danilo D’Ambrosio, Andrea Ranocchia, Alessandro Bastoni; Matteo Darmian, Arturo Vidal, Marcelo Brozovic, Ivan Perisic; Christian Erisken; Romelu Lukaku, Lautaro Martinez.

GENOA SUBS: Andrea Masiello, Luca Pellegrini, Davide Biraschi, Mattia Destro, Vittorio Parigini, Federico Marchetti, Filippo Melegoni, Daniel Dumbravanu, Eldor Shomurodov, Miha Zajc, Alberto Paleari, Ivan Radovanovic.

Inter are winless in their last three games in all competitions, having drawn against Lazio and then suffering a 2-1 derby defeat against Milan last weekend in Serie A. This leaves them seventh in the table, with 7 points from four games. Last time out they drew 2-2 in the Champions League against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Genoa recovered from a 6-0 thrashing against Napoli, to clinch a point against Verona, but they only have four from four games so far this season, which leaves them 11th in the Serie A table.
